Our Initiatives

Our Approach

The Sohn Conference Foundation takes a unique, selective investor’s approach to grant making. The Foundation supports cutting-edge research, innovative technologies, and bold initiatives that will have the greatest impact in treating and curing pediatric cancer. The Foundation designed its approach in response to the challenges faced by the field of pediatric cancer. The strategy has four prongs:

Pershing Square

The Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance is dedicated to playing a catalytic role in accelerating cures for cancer by enabling the pursuit of the most innovative and advanced cancer research and by facilitating collaborations between science and business.

The Pershing Square Foundation’s commitment to be a philanthropic catalyst inspired long-time Sohn speaker Bill Ackman to partner with The Sohn Conference Foundation to accelerate cures for cancer. The partnership of these two foundations leverages their respective resources, their investigators, and their opportunities to exponentially impact the field of cancer research.

The Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance sponsors the signature Pershing Square Sohn Prize for Young Investigators in Cancer Research, which provides young New York-based scientists the freedom to take risks and pursue their boldest research at a stage when traditional funding is lacking. In the quest for cures, the Prize will accelerate the collaboration between academia and industry. Prize winners receive $200,000 a year for up to three years, and the Alliance has already named twelve winners since 2014.

Greenlight Capital

Year after year, David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital regales Sohn Investment Conference audiences with his prophetic conceptualizations of major wall-street trends. What is less well-known is that he has also rocked the philanthropic world from the Sohn stage. He decided to become a Sohn partner when he dedicated the proceeds from one of his great stock predictions to the Sohn Conference Foundation.

Einhorn’s inspiration and investment led the Foundation to create a first-of-its kind palliative care program at Hackensack University Medical Center, overseen by the great Dr. Michael Harris. The idea was simple, yet desperately underfunded: retain professionals dedicated to alleviating the physical pain children with cancer endure.

Thanks to David’s generosity and partnership with Sohn, Hackensack’s children now have these services and the Sohn palliative-care program serves as a model to children’s hospitals around the nation.

Inspire

Cutting-Edge Scientific ResearchCollaborations in New York City.

There is no other city in the United States that is home to so many premier research institutions. The Foundation emboldens the City's best research hospitals to collaborate, leveraging their resources and talent for maximum results.

Invest

in State-of-the-Art Technology

New technologies—microscopes, cell sorters, DNA sequencers—will lead scientists to medical breakthroughs, but these technologies are expensive and government funds do not support such purchases. New technologies will enable scientists to understand each child’s cancer and customize medical treatments.

Develop

the Next Generation of Physician Scientists

Right now, too few young, bright physician scientists are researching pediatric cancer, resulting in a crisis within the field. The Foundation seeds a fellowship program to award funding to innovative, new scientists who are being overseen by the current leaders in the field.

Promote

Quality of Care for Children with Cancer

Insurance does not support comprehensive quality-of-life initiatives in hospitals. The Foundation funds cutting-edge diagnostic precision medicine and the renovation of dilapidated spaces to improve the quality of the treatment experience for children with cancer.

Transformative Initiatives

The Sohn Conference Foundation pursues preeminent and bold partners in its mission to treat and cure pediatric cancer. It does not limit resources to a single type of cancer, research focus, or hospital. The Foundation funds medical research, technology, and innovative projects at the following extraordinary institutions.
